Two houses a mile apart can need completely different things. A few patterns we see:

Victorian and Edwardian houses near the centre

Bigger Victorian and Edwardian houses, often with two or three bathrooms. Hot water demand can be high, so depending on the property and what’s already there, a system boiler with a cylinder can make more sense than a combi. Older pipework usually needs a proper clean when the boiler is changed.

The big houses in Bowdon, Hale and Hale Barns

Some of the largest homes in Greater Manchester are just outside the town centre, with five or more bathrooms and heating across several floors. They often need two boilers, a large cylinder or a heat pump designed for the house. We’ve written separate pages for Bowdon, Hale and Hale Barns.

Timperley and Broadheath

Lots of three-bed semis. Many already have combis. Others are good candidates for a combi conversion or a heat pump, but that depends on heat loss, radiator sizes and how much hot water you use. There’s more on heating in Timperley on its own page.

Town centre flats and newer builds

Compact combis or electric heating, often in rented flats. Access and parking can take a bit of planning, which is worth mentioning when you book.

Wood burners and the smoke control area

The whole of Trafford, Altrincham included, is a smoke control area. That affects which fuels you can burn and which stoves can legally burn them, so check the current rules before you buy or fit a wood burner. Our gas fires and stoves page has more detail.

All the time. Plenty of homes here still have tanks in the loft, gravity-fed hot water or old back boilers, and we’re happy to repair them or talk you through upgrading.
